Spell is een rituele performance, ontstaan uit een langetermijnsonderzoek naar somatische vormen van verzet, een zoektocht naar alternatieve vormen van angst en rouw.

In een onbenoemd niemandsland geven twee lichamen zich over aan een repetitieve choreografie van cliche en transformatie. Ze schudden hun culturele erfenis, de opgelegde gendernormen en politieke verdrukking uit hun lijf, en proberen telkens opnieuw om zichzelf heruit te vinden, in een alternatief kader van begrip en verbinding.

Igor Shyshko en Albina Vakhitova gaan in dialoog met de bezwerende tekst, gebracht door Elke Van Campenhout, de ‘spreuk’ die een ruimte creëert waarin lege beelden, verdriet en plezier, ambiguïteit en strijd naast mekaar mogen bestaan.

Spell produceert geen kant en klare politieke boodschappen, maar opent een meerlagig existentieel gebied van onzekerheid, rond hoe het is om vandaag te leven, te werken en relaties aan te gaan. Als immigranten, als cultuurwerkers, als magische wezens.

Igor Shyshko ontwikkelde een unieke bewegingstaal in zijn werk, waarbij hij balanceert tussen ‘natuurlijke’ choreografie, rituele beweging en meditatieve praktijk. Voor Malus werkte hij samen met een klassieke operazanger aan een introspectieve choreografie met yogische en transformatieve elementen. In The Box liet hij externe omstandigheden de vorm van zijn lichaam dicteren, terwijl hij twaalf uur lang in een doos zat opgesloten. Voor die performance onderwierp hij zichzelf aan gedwongen stilstand, om zo uit het helse tempo van het hedendaagse leven te stappen. In Spell slaat hij de tegenovergestelde weg in; en omarmt hij de genadeloze wervelwind van het dagelijks leven, als een weg naar transformatieve uitputting.

Spell is a ritualistic performance, that was born out of a long-term research on somatic forms of resistance and the reappropriation of patterns of fear and mourning. In a kind of no man’s land two bodies abandon themselves to a repetitive struggle for release. Letting go of the burden of the homeland, of memory, of gender norms and dire political struggle, they attempt over and over again cross over, to arrive into another existential reality.

Igor Shyshko and Albina Vakhitova go in dialogue with the incantatory text, performed by Elke Van Campenhout, the ‘spell’ that holds the space for them to hold cliche and pain, joy and release, ambiguity and struggle.

Spell does not produce ready-made political messages, but unfolds a multi-layered existential field of uncertainty, of what it is to live, and work, and relate today. As immigrants, as cultural workers, as magical beings.

Choreographer Igor Shyshko has developed a unique movement language in his work, balancing between ‘natural’ choreography, ritual movement, and meditative practice. For Malus, he collaborated with a classical opera singer on an introspective choreography with yogic and transformative elements. In The Box, he let external conditions dictate his body’s form as he remained confined in a cube for twelve hours. In that performance, Shyshko subjected himself to enforced stillness, distancing himself from the frantic pace of modern life. In Spell, he takes the opposite approach: embracing the relentless whirl of daily life as a path towards transformative exhaustion.
