Over the last twenty years, choreographer and performer Marc Vanrunxt and visual artist Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven have frenquently worked together on film and video projects. This shared history resonates in Deeper. In 2003, Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven created an installation of which the film Deeper was part. Now, in 2014, the film is published as an autonomous work.
The physical appearance of Marc Vanrunxt is in itself unavoidable: he is tall. For this reason, in a series of scenes filmed in ordinary locations such as a living room, a bridge and a town square, simple actions and minor manipulations by the dancer are sufficient to mark the space. His physical presence is a means of evoking images, energies and lines of force, and of making the space visible in an almost organic way.
In Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven’s computer, this world and the symbolic spaces it contains still undergo a number of thorough transformations. Once captured in a series of flat images, they can in their turn be reversed, duplicated and ‘masked’: accelerated, cut and pasted, coloured and distorted by the means of abstract animation, ranging from numbers to areas of vivid colour. Extreme digital manipulation brings about a fundamental inversion, because it uses images not so much to give meaning to the obvious surrounding reality, but rather to found a world of its own.
The DVD will be presented on November 15, 3PM, during the Playground Festival at STUK, Leuven.
