Angle is a dance solo created and performed by Salva Sanchis. It is set to short piano solo pieces by György Ligeti, John Cage, Luciano Berio, Jo Kondo and Keiko Harada, which will be performed live by pianist Yutaka Oya.
Angle is dance piece about the perception of dance. Its title refers specifically to the way we look at dance. As we all know, dance, just like music, doesnt stand alone. It needs an audience to fulfill its purpose, and the audience brings in as much baggage as the artist to that relation.
As the zen quote above tells us, since the movement actually happens in our minds, what we see might vary depending on how we look at it.
In Angle, Salva Sanchis establishes a bridge between the spectator and the dance, so that this time, the spectator is not left alone in figuring out how to look at the dance. Thoughts, quotes and artists ideas will be provided as a subtle framing to the open experience that the dance offers to us. The space for free interpretation will remain open. Rather than receiving an explanation, we will be shown possible directions. Rather than being dictated what to perceive, we will be made aware that how we perceive is mainly dictated by ourselves in the first place.
Salva Sanchis shows and questions the relation between dance, music and text on the one side, and the perception of each of those elements by the audience on the other side. He chooses for a construction in which all the parts are interlinked and yet they keep their autonomy. Thus, Angle consists of a multi-layered structure that invites us to make connections between elements.
The final objective will be for the dance and the spectator to meet on equal terms, both free and responsible. And just as sounds travel through space and become music only inside our minds, the dance too will invite our minds to...dance with it.

In het voorjaar van 2012 wordt u één keer per maand, telkens op een maandagavond, ondergedompeld in de manier van werken en denken van Marc Vanrunxt. Zes unieke avonden werpen één na één perspectief op het werk van deze Antwerpse choreograaf die zich al meer dan twintig jaar laat gelden in het hedendaagse danslandschap. Hij blikt terug op zijn werk, staat stil en kijkt vooruit. Als een poging tot archiveren vanuit het heden met blik op de toekomst. Máár Vanrunxt zou Vanrunxt niet zijn mocht ook dit project geen ´twist´ krijgen. Vanrunxt is een meester in het consequent volhouden van zijn eigen choreografische principes. Waar je denkt dat hij zijn meest extreme punt bereikt heeft, gaat hij nog net even verder. Keer op keer maakt hij voorstellingen die een uiterste concentratie vragen van de kijker en van de dansers. Ingehouden energie en repetitieve bewegingspatronen weet Vanrunxt telkens opnieuw om te zetten tot een groots, universeel gebaar dat zich met slaande kracht naar buiten keert. Net op die momenten dat je het niet meer verwacht als kijker komt er steeds weer dat keerpunt waardoor je volledig in het werk gezogen wordt en je begrijpt waarom die aanloop zo noodzakelijk was. Dezelfde durf en radicaliteit zet hij ook door in Marc@Monday, zowel vormelijk als inhoudelijk. Hij gaat de uitdaging aan om zes keer op rij op zeer korte termijn te creëren en te presenteren. Met deze reeks beoogt Vanrunxt zowel een reflectie op de eigen praktijk als een verdieping voor het publiek. Vanrunxt grijpt de kans om nieuwe aanzetten te geven, ouder werk te herdenken of in een nieuwe context te plaatsen en om nieuwe creaties aan repertoire te spiegelen.
Zes avonden als deelvlakken die leiden tot het geheel van zijn oeuvre met hier en daar ook vluchtlijnen die het hexagonale volume openbreken. Zie het als een scharniermoment, een schakel op de vooravond van een nieuwe creatiefase.

Zeit is the first duet Marc Vanrunxt has created in his career as a choreographer. It is a duet for two exceptional dancers, Eva Kamala Rodenburg (Private Collection, Raum, Extraction) and Igor Shyshko (former dancer with Rosas), who in this setting transform into a mythical couple. With their tall, androgynous figures they appear to be a likeness of each other, which is both differentiated and duplicated by the differences in their languages of movement.
Zeit is based on the double album of the same name by Tangerine Dream (1972). Tangerine Dream was an early electronic pop/rock group from Germany which helped to create the basis of electronic music as we now know it, ranging from Kraftwerk and Brian Eno to Radiohead and Recoil.
Like Raum, a three-hour performance Vanrunxt created in 2006, Zeit is also an attempt to convert the concept of time into space and make it tangible. However, while Raum starts with three performers almost imperceptibly moving backwards in space, Zeit begins with Eva Kamala Rodenburg and Igor Shyshko side by side and moving diagonally across the space, gaze fixed on infinity and full of expectation and yearning for the future. Whereas Raum was a performance of presence set in the here and now, Zeit is much more focused on something that has yet to emerge.
Zeit is about the connection between the individual and the cosmos, between micro and macro, and translates as a quest for new dimensions and ways to break out.

This publication by dance organisation Kunst/Werk presents the work of choreographers Marc Vanrunxt and Salva Sanchis and of the collective C&H, which is formed by Heike Langsdorf, Christoph Ragg and Christophe Meierhans. Within the collaborative context of Kunst/Werk these artists develop their autonomous artistic work. Kunst/Werk produces performances, does research and organises projects mainly in the field of contemporary dance and performance art. This publication features text contributions by: Alex Arteaga, Steven De Belder, Lieve Dierckx, Mette Ingvartsen, Lars Kwakkenbos, Joaquim Noguero, Alexander Schellow and Pieter T Jonck.
